Signs You Need a New Carpet: When To Replace Your Old Carpet

May 19, 2026

If your carpet looks tired, feels uncomfortable underfoot, or no longer responds to cleaning, these are clear signs you need a new carpet — and replacing it at the right time can dramatically improve comfort, hygiene, and the overall look of your home.

This guide is for Auckland homeowners, landlords, and property managers who want clear guidance on when carpet needs replacing, what to evaluate before making a decision, and when repairs no longer make sense. Drawing on the experience of our experts at Online Carpet, a trusted Auckland carpet shop with professional installers, we outline the visual, functional, and hidden indicators that signal the need for new flooring.

Replacing Carpet: Key Visual Signals

Carpet Flattening and Loss of Pile

One of the most obvious signs that carpet needs to be replaced is flattening. Over time, foot traffic compresses the carpet pile—the soft, raised surface made from fibres—especially in walkways, hallways, and living areas. Once the fibres no longer bounce back, the carpet loses comfort and appearance.

A flattened carpet isn’t just cosmetic — it’s a sign the pile has lost resilience, meaning the fibres are permanently damaged.

The Vacuum Test: A Simple Visual Check

A quick way to assess pile health is the vacuum test:

  • Vacuum a section of carpet in two different directions.
  • Look for defined vacuum lines.
  • If vacuum lines disappear quickly or don’t appear at all, the pile is worn out.

This is a practical method for homeowners who are wondering when to replace carpet, rather than guessing.

| Pro tip: For consistent tracking, take photos after each vacuum and compare results over time to identify wear progression.

Fraying, Loose Tufts, and Edge Damage

Fraying edges, unravelling seams, or tufts pulling free from the backing are strong indicators that your carpet has reached the end of its usable life. These issues commonly appear near doorways, stairs, and furniture edges.

At this stage, repairs are usually short-term fixes rather than long-term solutions.

Stubborn Stains That Won’t Come Out

If you’re dealing with persistent stains that remain after professional cleaning, the fibres may be permanently damaged. Older carpets — especially non–solution-dyed types — absorb stains deep into the pile and backing.

When stains reappear or never fully lift, it’s a clear sign that replacement will be more cost-efficient  than repeated cleaning.

Discolouration From Sunlight and Traffic

UV exposure causes fading, particularly in rooms with large windows. Combine this with uneven wear from foot traffic, and your carpet can look patchy, dull, and aged — even if it’s technically intact (with the backing and pile not yet separated).

Noticeable discolouration that can’t be reversed is another strong signal that it’s time to upgrade.

Flattening Test: How To Check Pile Resilience

To assess whether your carpet fibres are still doing their job:

  1. Vacuum a small area in straight lines.
  2. Walk away for 10–15 minutes.
  3. Return and inspect the pile.

If the fibres remain flat or vacuum marks vanish, the pile has lost resilience. This test is especially helpful in heavily trafficked areas, such as lounges and hallways.

| Photograph your results regularly, as a visible decline over time clarifies the best time for replacement.

Wear And Tear: Functional Problems

Underlay Breakdown

Carpet comfort comes from both the carpet and the underlay beneath it. Over time, the underlay compresses, crumbles, and moves, leading to:

  • Hard or uneven flooring
  • Reduced insulation
  • Less noise absorption

If your carpet feels flat even after cleaning, degraded underlay may be the cause — often paired with fibre wear.

Matting  Busy-Traffic Areas

Matting occurs when carpet fibres twist and clump together. This is especially common in entryways and corridors. Matting makes the carpet feel rough, look dark, and trap dirt more easily.

Once matting appears, cleaning will not restore the original carpet texture.

Rippling, Buckling, and Ridges

Loose carpet that ripples or forms ridges isn’t just unsightly — it creates a trip hazard. This usually occurs as carpet backing stretches or adhesives fail.

With older carpets, re-stretching is often ineffective. Replacement is safer and more reliable.

Old Carpet: Age And Time To Replace

Typical Carpet Lifespans

As a general guide:

  • Rental-grade carpet: 5–7 years
  • Mid-range residential carpet: 8–12 years
  • High-quality wool carpet: 12–20 years (with care)

If you do not know your carpet’s age, visible wear or reduced comfort are reliable signs that replacement is needed.

Factors That Shorten Carpet Life

  • Heavy foot traffic
  • Pets and children
  • Direct sunlight
  • Low-quality underlay
  • Infrequent professional cleaning

Bedrooms may last much longer than lounges, living areas, corridors and high-traffic rooms, which is why room-by-room replacement is often recommended.

Deciding When To Replace Your Carpet

Lingering Odours

If unpleasant smells persist even after deep cleaning, odours may be embedded in the backing or underlay. Common causes include:

  • Pet accidents
  • Smoke
  • Moisture exposure

This is one of the most overlooked signs you need a new carpet.

Mould Under the Carpet

Mould can develop unseen after flooding, leaks, or prolonged dampness. If you notice musty smells or visible spotting near edges, replacement is strongly advised.

Water Damage Thresholds

Generally, if a carpet has been wet for more than 24–48 hours, it is unlikely to dry fully underneath the surface. In these situations, replacement is safer and healthier than restoration attempts.

Odour And Mould Check

Simple checks you can do at home:

  • Sniff test: Get close to the carpet surface and edges
  • Moisture test: Feel for dampness near skirting boards
  • Lift corner inspection: Look for dark patches or residue underneath.

If mould or odour is detected, replacement is the best long-term solution.

Resale Value: Selling Considerations

Worn or stained carpet can reduce buyer confidence. Many Auckland buyers factor in replacement costs when making an offer, often overestimating the expense.

Replacing carpet before listing:

  • Improves first impressions
  • Makes spaces feel cleaner and newer
  • Can increase perceived property value

Online Carpet works with homeowners preparing properties for sale and provides advice on cost-effective replacement options.

When Repairs Might Be Enough

In some cases, replacement isn’t immediately necessary. Repairs may be suitable if:

  • Damage is localised (small burns or stains)
  • The carpet is relatively new.
  • Underlay is still in good condition.

However, if repair costs approach 30–40% of replacement, upgrading usually offers better value.

| In rare cases, replacing the underlay only can extend carpet life — our team can assess this  during an in-home visit.

How To Plan Replacing Carpet

Measuring Your Space

  • Measure the length × width of each room.
  • Add allowances for doorways and wardrobes.
  • Note stairs separately

Budgeting for Replacement

Consider:

  • Carpet material and fibre
  • Underlay quality
  • Installation complexity
  • Furniture moving

Investing in quality underlay often delivers the biggest comfort upgrade.

Hire Professional Installers

What is the difference between cheap and expensive laminate?

You get what you pay for with laminate flooring, with cheaper ranges using core material and joints that will swell more aggressively if exposed to water during cleaning or from spills. The repeat pattern is also a good indication of quality, ie. our best range has a pattern repeat of 10sqm, where most ranges are 3sqm. This ensures your floor looks authentic.

Can vinyl planks be used in wet areas?

Yes they can.

Do I need to move my furniture?

This can be discussed at the time of measuring. We can assist with moving large furniture items, but will still require you to empty shelves, move smaller items and unmake beds etc.

What does the ‘weight’ of the carpet mean?

Carpet quality is measured in weight, or ‘oz’. Essentially, the heavier a carpet is, means the longer it will last you and the nicer it will feel underfoot. As well as quality increasing as weight increases, price also goes up.

Is Nylon, wool or polyester carpet best?

Each have their own strengths and weaknesses and we are happy to discuss this further with you, however Solution Dyed Nylon tends to be what we sell the most of.

What is the guarantee on the installation?

We provide a lifetime guarantee on the installation.

What is the process of getting new flooring?

If you have an idea of what you want, the next step is to book in for a measure. You will receive a written quote within 24 hours. Once you accept the quote, we will work with you to find a suitable installation date and will request a 50% deposit. Your flooring will then be ordered. Installation timing varies depending on your needs, layer and product availability. Install usually takes 1-2 days depending on the size of your property. The final payment is due on job completion.

Can I shop ‘online?’

Carpet and flooring is a big investment and it can look a lot different in real life to the photos you see online. You can do your research and book your appointment online and then sit back and let our experts come to your home for you to view samples.

Can laminate be used in wet areas?

Some of our laminate ranges can be used in wet areas such as bathrooms and laundries as they have joint sealing technology that will resist water for a long period of time.

How do I best clean my vinyl planks or laminate floor?

Laminate and vinyl floors are very easy to maintain and should only require vacuuming and mopping. However, you should never use a steam mop on either vinyl planks or laminate. Rubber backed items such as mats or bar stool feet should not be used on vinyl floors as these can cause discolouration.

What is tracking and shading?

Plush carpets will show slight depressions left behind from footprints. This is normal and will come out with your next vacuum. All solution dyed nylon carpets do this to some extent, but some more than others, so let us know if this is something you don’t like and we will point you towards the ranges that do it the least.

How long will new carpet last me?

Depending on the weight of your new carpet, and how it is looked after, most manufacturers say carpet should last for ten years.

Do you do repairs?

Our main service is supplying and installing new flooring, however if you have something you are stuck on we can likely steer you in the right direction.

Will I need my doors trimmed?

Sometimes you do need to trim the doors. We have a handyman who charges a very reasonable price, we recommend using him if your doors need to be trimmed.

What sort of carpet or flooring is suitable for me?

We need to establish what your needs are. Is this for your own home, for a rental or are you selling? The best way to do this is to call into our showroom or you can ring and talk to one of our experienced sales staff.
