The Best Types of Carpet: A Comprehensive Guide to Styles and Benefits

May 19, 2026

Carpet is more than a floor covering — it adds warmth, style, and comfort to any living or working space. Yet with so many carpet types, fibres, styles, and textures available, choosing the right one for your New Zealand home or business can feel overwhelming.

At Online Carpet, we understand how important it is to find the perfect flooring that balances durability, comfort, aesthetics, and budget. This comprehensive guide will help you navigate the world of carpets — from loop pile carpets and cut pile carpets, to wool carpets, nylon carpets, and other popular carpet fibres — so you can make an informed decision.

Understanding Carpet Styles: Loop Pile, Cut Pile, and More

Loop Pile Carpet

Loop pile carpets feature yarn loops that remain uncut on the surface, creating a durable texture. In loop-pile carpets, the yarn forms small, closed loops, which make the carpet durable and good at hiding dirt. This style is ideal for high-traffic areas like hallways, offices, and commercial spaces due to its resistance to pile flattening and ability to hide dirt.

Popular loop pile options include Berber, which has a casual, speckled look. Other loop-style carpets offer great stain resistance and durability. Their textured surfaces make them practical for busy homes.

Cut Pile Carpets

In cut-pile carpets, the cut yarn loops leave upright fibres that create a soft, plush feel. In cut pile, the tops of the yarn loops are cut off, leaving each strand to stand upright, making the carpet soft to the touch. This style not only feels comfortable but also enhances rooms with its elegant appearance and sound-absorbing qualities, making it ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, and low-traffic areas.

Variants include plush carpet (with a smooth surface), Saxony carpet (with a formal look), and frieze carpet, which has long twisted fibres that help disguise footprints and vacuum marks.

Popular Carpet Fibres: Wool, Nylon, Polyester, and More

Wool Carpets

Wool carpets are prized for their natural fibres, offering an unmatched luxurious feel, durability, and warmth. The key benefits of New Zealand wool include its eco-friendliness, natural noise absorption for quieter spaces, and its ability to enhance air quality by trapping dust particles.

Pure wool carpet is resilient, offering long-lasting plushness. Its fibres wick away moisture and help trap dust particles, enhancing indoor air quality.

While wool carpets are naturally stain-resistant to some extent, prompt cleaning of oil and other liquids is needed to preserve their appearance. They suit low- to medium-traffic areas because of higher cost and delicate care needs.

Nylon Carpets

Nylon carpets are among the most popular synthetic carpets due to their outstanding durability and stain resistance. Solution-dyed nylon carpets offer additional benefits, such as excellent fade resistance and vibrant colour retention, even in strong sunlight.

This makes them perfect for heavy-use areas exposed to sunlight. Nylon fibres resist crushing and pile flattening, and are easy to clean—simply vacuum regularly and address spills promptly—making them ideal for families or high-traffic areas.

While nylon is a synthetic fibre and less eco-friendly than wool, many manufacturers now produce nylon carpets using recycled materials and energy-efficient processes.

Polyester Carpets

Known for vibrant colours and softness, polyester carpets are affordable alternatives to wool and nylon. Often made from recycled plastic bottles, they appeal to eco-conscious buyers seeking sustainable options.

Polyester carpets are naturally stain-resistant and have excellent colour retention, though they tend to be less durable under heavy foot traffic than nylon carpets.

Green Star BioLoop Carpet

Represents the next generation of sustainable flooring. Designed with environmentally responsible materials, BioLoop carpets focus on reduced environmental impact while maintaining durability and performance.

Key benefits include sustainable and eco-conscious manufacturing processes that reduce environmental impact, low VOC emissions that help maintain healthier indoor air quality, durable construction suitable for both residential and commercial environments, and a design focused on long-term performance with recyclability in mind.

Polypropylene Carpets (Olefin)

Olefin carpets are made from synthetic materials and are known for excellent moisture and stain resistance. These carpets are ideal for basements, outdoor areas, and damp spaces because they resist both oil stains and mildew. While olefin is less resilient than nylon and wool, its primary benefits are strong water, oil, and mildew resistance.

Carpet Pile and Texture: How Yarn Loops Affect Look and Durability

The carpet pile refers to how the fibres or yarn loops are constructed on the carpet’s surface, greatly affecting texture, appearance, and durability.

  • Loop Pile: Yarn loops are left intact (uncut), creating a firm, textured surface. Loop pile carpets have come a long way from traditional designs, now featuring a variety of patterns and textures.
  • Cut Pile: Yarn loops are cut to create upright strands, offering a softer feel. Cut pile carpets are the most popular choice for residential homes.

Different carpet textures, such as plush carpet with dense, upright pile, or frieze carpet with twisted fibres, influence softness and how well the carpet hides footprints and vacuum marks.

Choosing Carpet Types for Different Spaces and Lifestyles

High-Traffic Areas

In busy hallways, stairs, and commercial spaces, durable loop-pile carpets or solution-dyed nylon options excel. Their resilience to pile flattening and stain resistance keeps them looking newer, longer.

Living Rooms and Bedrooms

Soft, warm wool carpets or cut pile carpets like Saxony or plush carpet provide the luxurious, comfortable feel ideal for relaxing spaces. Triexta, with its superior pile recovery compared to other synthetic fibres, not only ensures durability but also offers long-lasting softness underfoot.

Low-Traffic Areas

In spaces like guest rooms or formal sitting areas, you can opt for high-end pure wool carpet or textured shag pile carpet for style and comfort.

Carpet Construction and Backing Materials

The construction of the carpet also matters. Tufted carpets are common and feature yarn stitched into a backing material. The quality of carpet backing affects stability and longevity.

Choosing a carpet with a strong backing improves durability and helps prevent wrinkles or movement after installation.

Stain Resistance and Carpet Maintenance

All carpets require care, but synthetic carpets like nylon and polyester tend to be more stain-resistant and low-maintenance than natural fibres. Solution-dyed nylon is especially effective at resisting stains and fading.

Wool carpets are highly absorbent, so they are less stain-resistant than synthetic fibres.

Polyester is a synthetic fibre that offers a luxurious feel at a lower price point than wool. Its main benefits include lasting colourfastness and softness, making it a practical and affordable choice, though its lifespan may be shorter than other materials.

Triexta is made from a renewable polymer derived from corn sugar and offers excellent stain resistance.

Textured carpets are popular for their durability and ability to hide dirt and footprints.

Regular vacuuming and prompt cleaning of spills are essential for maintaining any carpet’s look and lifespan. Wool carpets require more careful maintenance but offer exceptional comfort and longevity. Carpet fading can occur over time when exposed to direct sunlight. Proper installation procedures can help prevent issues such as carpet wrinkling or rucking after installation.

Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Carpet Options

Many manufacturers now produce carpets with sustainability in mind. Wool carpets stand out for being made from natural fibres that are biodegradable and renewable. Meanwhile, some synthetic carpets are made from recycled plastic bottles or other materials, offering a lower environmental impact.

What is the difference between cheap and expensive laminate?

You get what you pay for with laminate flooring, with cheaper ranges using core material and joints that will swell more aggressively if exposed to water during cleaning or from spills. The repeat pattern is also a good indication of quality, ie. our best range has a pattern repeat of 10sqm, where most ranges are 3sqm. This ensures your floor looks authentic.

Can vinyl planks be used in wet areas?

Yes they can.

Do I need to move my furniture?

This can be discussed at the time of measuring. We can assist with moving large furniture items, but will still require you to empty shelves, move smaller items and unmake beds etc.

What does the ‘weight’ of the carpet mean?

Carpet quality is measured in weight, or ‘oz’. Essentially, the heavier a carpet is, means the longer it will last you and the nicer it will feel underfoot. As well as quality increasing as weight increases, price also goes up.

Is Nylon, wool or polyester carpet best?

Each have their own strengths and weaknesses and we are happy to discuss this further with you, however Solution Dyed Nylon tends to be what we sell the most of.

What is the guarantee on the installation?

We provide a lifetime guarantee on the installation.

What is the process of getting new flooring?

If you have an idea of what you want, the next step is to book in for a measure. You will receive a written quote within 24 hours. Once you accept the quote, we will work with you to find a suitable installation date and will request a 50% deposit. Your flooring will then be ordered. Installation timing varies depending on your needs, layer and product availability. Install usually takes 1-2 days depending on the size of your property. The final payment is due on job completion.

Can I shop ‘online?’

Carpet and flooring is a big investment and it can look a lot different in real life to the photos you see online. You can do your research and book your appointment online and then sit back and let our experts come to your home for you to view samples.

Can laminate be used in wet areas?

Some of our laminate ranges can be used in wet areas such as bathrooms and laundries as they have joint sealing technology that will resist water for a long period of time.

How do I best clean my vinyl planks or laminate floor?

Laminate and vinyl floors are very easy to maintain and should only require vacuuming and mopping. However, you should never use a steam mop on either vinyl planks or laminate. Rubber backed items such as mats or bar stool feet should not be used on vinyl floors as these can cause discolouration.

What is tracking and shading?

Plush carpets will show slight depressions left behind from footprints. This is normal and will come out with your next vacuum. All solution dyed nylon carpets do this to some extent, but some more than others, so let us know if this is something you don’t like and we will point you towards the ranges that do it the least.

How long will new carpet last me?

Depending on the weight of your new carpet, and how it is looked after, most manufacturers say carpet should last for ten years.

Do you do repairs?

Our main service is supplying and installing new flooring, however if you have something you are stuck on we can likely steer you in the right direction.

Will I need my doors trimmed?

Sometimes you do need to trim the doors. We have a handyman who charges a very reasonable price, we recommend using him if your doors need to be trimmed.

What sort of carpet or flooring is suitable for me?

We need to establish what your needs are. Is this for your own home, for a rental or are you selling? The best way to do this is to call into our showroom or you can ring and talk to one of our experienced sales staff.
